We are proud to announce a major milestone for Monsoon Carbon and Malaysia’s Voluntary Carbon Market. On 18 June 2025, carbon credits issued under our Monsoon Methane Avoidance from Industrial Wastewater in Malaysia Grouped Project, developed in collaboration with our partner Cenergi SEA were successfully auctioned on the Bursa Carbon Exchange (BCX). This marked the debut of Malaysia’s Technology-Based Carbon Credit (MTC) Contracts.
The Langkap Biogas Plant in Perak is the first project to issue credits under this Grouped Project, which focuses on reducing methane emissions from palm oil mill effluent (POME) – a potent source of industrial wastewater emissions in Malaysia. The project installs covered lagoons or closed-tank digesters to capture methane, which is thereby used to generate renewable electricity supplying to the grid to reduce the national dependence on fossil fuel energy, turning waste into a valuable climate solution.
Methane is over 28 times more potent than CO₂ over a 100-year period (IPCC Sixth Assessment Report). Avoiding methane emissions from POME treatment is a high-impact, near-term climate opportunity. Yet, small and medium-sized project developers often face barriers in accessing carbon markets due to cost, complexity, and limited market linkages.
That’s where our Grouped Project approach comes in. By consolidating multiple eligible biogas projects under a single, standardized methodology, we simplify the process for developers while enabling them to generate and monetize high-integrity carbon credits. The Group model supports sustainable palm oil production, incentivizes climate-smart technologies, and makes it easier for companies to participate in Malaysia’s growing carbon market.
We thank Bursa Carbon Exchange (BCX) and all collaborators who supported the successful launch of this auction. We look forward to expanding our Grouped Project with more Palm Oil and Biogas Owners across Malaysia and the region.
Keen to Learn More about all Grouped Projects at Monsoon?
As we’re continuing to scale impactful, providing our end-to-end carbon services to any eligible biogas projects, accelerating climate actions, we are currently developing a similar Grouped Project model in Indonesia on Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard.
Our Grouped Projects are open to new biogas projects that are not yet operational and can involve methane capture from any type of industrial wastewater. If you believe you have a suitable biogas plant, we’d love to hear from you.
