International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs)
Get quality I-RECs to reduce your carbon footprint from electricity consumption and achieve your sustainability goals!
What are I-RECs?
The International Tracking Standard is a global system for tracking the environmental attributes of electricity generated from renewable sources. The tracking is achieved by the use of verified, traceable certificates known as I-RECs.
I-RECs monitor the journey of renewable energy from its generation at a power plant to its consumption by the end user. The system for I-RECs operates much like the Guarantees of Origin (GOs) in Europe and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in the United States. While GOs and RECs track energy in their markets, I-RECs offers this capability in many other countries.
Why is Tracking of Renewable Electricity Useful?
In an ideal world, consumers should be able to purchase renewable electricity directly. However, that is not practical in many locations, and national grids tend to provide a mix of renewable and non-renewable electricity.
I-RECs enable the “environmental attribute” of the renewable electricity generated to be sold separately from the electricity itself. One I-REC is equivalent to one MWhr of renewable energy supplied from a registered RE power plant.
I-RECs allow all electricity users to make a conscious choice to use renewable electricity. By purchasing I-RECs, consumers are able to show that they are consuming renewable electricity and, in doing so, reduce their environmental impact and achieve their sustainability targets.
How do I-RECs Work?
I-RECs are created for each MWh of renewable energy produced by power plants registered on the I-REC Standard. Businesses can then purchase these I-RECs to ensure that no greenhouse gas has been released in the generation of the electricity they’ve used.
The revenue generated supports the development of new renewable energy projects, encouraging further reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and benefiting end-consumers.

Who Administers I-RECs?
The I-REC standard is now governed by The International Tracking Standard Foundation (I-TRACK). The global registry for I-RECs is maintained by Evident.
I-TRACK dates back to 2014, when it was originally known as the I-REC Foundation. This group has designed the I-REC system carefully to facilitate reliable Scope 2 carbon accounting, consistent with various international accounting standards such as the Science Based Targets Initiative and the CDP.
Where are I-RECs Available for Purchase?
Companies can purchase I-RECs in over 60 countries approved by the International Tracking Standard. This enables your company to easily switch to renewable energy across its operating countries.
