Renewable Energy Certificates

Monsoon Carbon are leaders in Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). With well over 130 renewable power plants under management, we have a truly global footprint and we’re highly experienced in all the issues that go with originating and selling RECs.

What Are Renewable Energy Certificates?

RECs are a form of documentation that verifies the production of a certain amount of renewable energy. RECs are verified and issued by independent standards such as International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs).

All of our news relating to RECs and IRECs can be found here.

Who Buys RECs?

RECs are purchased by those looking to reduce their carbon emissions in a verifiable way. By purchasing renewable energy certificates, individuals and companies can support the development and production of renewable energy sources, which helps to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and combats climate change.

Why do Companies Buy RECs?

Renewable Energy Certificates are an established, accepted and cost-effective way to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy practices.

RECs are recognized by many international organizations as a valuable tool for reducing the impact of business and promoting renewable energy development. There are well-accepted Near Term Targets of 80% renewable energy use by 2025 and 100% by 2030, as set by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and aligning with RE100’s recommendations.

RECs are a flexible and scalable solution to meet these targets, which means that businesses of all sizes can participate and make a positive impact on the environment. Whether it’s a small business looking to reduce their carbon footprint or a large corporation committed to sustainability across their entire value chain, renewable energy certificates can help to achieve sustainability goals.

How are RECs Supplied by Renewable Energy Assets?

Renewable energy producers can supply RECs to the market of corporate buyers by registering on a relevant standard. There are various RECs standards in operation across the world, including I-RECs and TIGR.

At this point in time, not all countries have access to a REC standard. Contact us for more information about the standards available to your renewable energy assets.

Once registered on a suitable standard, asset owners verify their production of renewable energy, issue the resulting RECs, sell those RECs on to buyers and ultimately deliver the RECs to the buyer for retirement.

What are the Common Challenges for Asset Owners Considering RECs?

The RECs market moves at lightning speed, and for many owners of renewable energy assets, it’s just too hard to keep up. Opportunities for sales appear and close in as little as a few hours, and large tenders from multi-national buyers often require a single source for their entire global supply chain.

It can be a tough market for owners to truly achieve the potential from their renewable energy assets, and for many, it’s simply a distraction… unless they’ve got dedicated support.

Over 130 renewable energy power plants globally and counting!

RECs can provide an important source of revenue for renewable energy assets. It makes sense to trust the origination, sale and delivery of these valuable environmental commodities to the experienced hands at Monsoon Carbon.
