Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has announced Near Term targets to actively source renewable electricity. These targets will be key considerations for major companies around the world, as SBTi is one of the leading frameworks for companies looking to take ambitious climate action.
80% of Electricity Use to be Renewable by 2025
By 2025, it is expected that corporations will procure at least 80% of their electricity from renewable energy sources.
100% of Electricity Use to be Renewable by 2030
The percentage will go up to 100% by 2030. Leading companies globally, including Unilever, Google, Apple, Microsoft have already hit the mark of being 100% powered by renewables.
Others are well on the way. Companies like Adobe, Nike, IKEA, Coca-Cola, Decathlon, and Tetra Pak are all actively transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2030.
Why These Targets?
SBTi takes a science-based approach to recommendations. These Near Term targets align with the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.
These targets are also aligned with RE100 guidance. RE100 states that setting a 100% renewable electricity target by 2030 at the latest shows a strong level of leadership.
Other Requirements
Companies that already source electricity at or above these thresholds are required to maintain their use of renewable electricity at these levels, or continue to increase above this level. For long-term targets, companies shall maintain 100% renewable electricity procurement beyond 2030.
Making this Happen via Renewable Energy Certificates
These targets are actually not difficult to achieve. These targets can be achieved by adopting renewable energy generation or simply by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), enabling corporations to significantly reduce their emissions resulting from electricity consumption.
RECs are accepted by RE100 and SBTi as a valid way to switch to electricity sourced from renewable energy and as a simple and practical way to reduce Scope 2 emissions.
