Sapphire Wind Farm

Pakistan gold standard wind sapphire wind farm Monsoon Carbon 2
Sapphire Wind Farm is a 52.8MW wind power plant located 100km east-north-east from Karachi, Pakistan. Commissioned in November 2015 and owned by Sapphire Wind Power Co. Ltd., the project activity is the first of its kind in Pakistan.

Sapphire Wind Farm comprises 33 turbines, each 82.5m in diameter, and delivers power to the grid owned by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). It’s expected to supply an average annual generation of 137 GWh to the WAPDA grid and reduce the baseline grid emissions by approximately 60,000 tCO2e.

Over its estimated 20 year lifespan, Sapphire Wind Farm will generate a total amount of 2,750 GWh of electricity.

Expected Issuance

Based on the most recent data from the relevant electricity grid, the average annual issuance for 2021 and 2022 is 55,000 Verified Emission Reductions.

Sustainable Development Contributions

Sapphire Wind Farm contributes to SDG 7 “Clean Energy”, SDG 13 “Emissions Reductions” and SDG 8 “Job Creation”.

By adopting foreign manufactured wind turbines by General Electric, the Project promotes important transfer of technical know-how to Pakistan and acts as a pioneer in promoting the spread of this technology to other wind power projects. Sapphire Wind is the only wind project on Pakistan to have achieved IFC’s “Excellent” rating for Environment, Health, and Safety.
