Monsoon is proud to announce the successful registration of the Dadin Kowa Hydropower Plant in Nigeria under the International Tracking Standard (formerly the I-REC Standard). It is the only newly commissioned hydropower project in Nigeria offering a large volume of I-RECs.
Dadin Kowa Hydropower Plant
Dadin Kowa is a 40 MW hydropower project located on the Numan River in Gombe State, Nigeria. Commissioned in May 2023, the plant contributes approximately 240 GWh of clean electricity to the national grid annually.
The power generated is sold under a power purchase agreement to Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), offering a reliable source of energy for the North East sub-region, an area with limited grid-based power generation.

A Significant Addition to Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Sector
Dadin Kowa is a key addition to Nigeria’s renewable energy sector to diversify its energy mix. While the country primarily relies on gas for electricity, hydropower makes up about 30% of the energy mix. The Dadin Kowa plant contributes to enhancing grid stability and energy quality, contributing to Nigeria’s goal under the Electricity Vision 30:30:30: 30 GW by 2030, with 30% from renewables.
“This is timely and coming at a time the country is in need of every available power it can generate and wheel out to the end users,” NBET noted.
Economic and Social Impact
The Dadin Kowa project plays a key role in the socio-economic development of Gombe State and the North East region. It has created numerous jobs and supported local businesses in Gombe State, promoting economic growth.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, the project has also supported local education initiatives. The plant has donated educational materials and stationery to schools, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 4, “Quality Education.”

Companies in Nigeria now Can Purchase Hydro I-RECs!
This registration is great news for companies operating in Nigeria. Until now, the only other REC projects registered in the country were small rooftop solar installations and a hydropower plant commissioned over 30 years ago.
Now, companies can purchase a larger number of hydro I-RECs from a newly commissioned plant, offering a fresh option for certifying renewable electricity use.
Eligibility for RE100 and SBTi: Commissioned in 2023, the project qualifies for carbon reporting initiatives like RE100 and SBTi.
A Large Volume of RECs: It also generates a substantial number of RECs annually, enabling companies to significantly reduce their Scope 2 emissions.
The average annual issuance is 240,000 I-RECs.
About RECs
A REC is evidence that a unit of electricity was generated from a renewable source. RECs are issued and purchased on the basis that one certificate represents one megawatt hour of renewable electricity.
These certificates are purchased and retired to reduce a company’s Scope 2 emissions. Outside of the EU and the US, the most common standard for RECs is the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC).
Purchasing I-RECs is a cost-effective way to reduce a company’s carbon footprint. For the owners of renewable energy projects, I-RECs reward a project for the environmental attributes of the power they generate. This incentivises the replacement of non-renewable power and supports the transition to clean, renewable national grids.
