It was encouraging to see the growing momentum among businesses across Vietnam. More companies are actively exploring renewable electricity solutions, asking practical questions, and moving from ambition toward implementation.
There is no one-size-fits-all pathway
Every company has different operations, sustainability commitments, reporting requirements, budgets, and investment horizons. There is no single pathway to renewable electricity. Depending on their objectives and circumstances, companies may consider solutions such as rooftop solar, Direct Power Purchase Agreements (DPPAs), Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), or a combination of these approaches. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can also play an important supporting role by improving the flexibility and reliability of onsite renewable energy.
Each solution comes with its own considerations, including cost, regulatory requirements, implementation timelines, operational constraints, and expected outcomes. The important takeaway is not finding a one-size-fits-all solution, but identifying the approach that best fits your business today while supporting your long-term sustainability goals.
RECs continue to play a practical role
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) remain one of the most accessible and flexible renewable electricity procurement instruments available to companies. They can support market-based Scope 2 reporting, complement broader renewable electricity strategies, and, in some supply chain scenarios, contribute to Scope 3 initiatives involving supplier electricity consumption.
As renewable electricity markets continue to evolve, RECs remain an important tool within a broader decarbonization strategy. Companies and their supply chain and use RECs to align with leading international reporting frameworks and initiatives, including RE100, CDP, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and the GRI Standards, as well as industry-specific initiatives such as TCO Certified, EPEAT, the Higg Index, ResponsibleSteel and so on.
For many organizations, RECs provide an accessible and practical starting point to make measurable progress toward near-term renewable electricity and climate targets while continuing to develop longer-term solutions such as DPPAs. Organizations that begin planning, learning, and implementing practical solutions today will be better positioned to meet future regulatory requirements, customer expectations, and corporate climate commitments.
Credibility matters
Not all procurement decisions are simply about purchasing certificates. Companies should consider factors such as project type, project age, certificate ownership, country of origin, and alignment with their reporting frameworks when developing a renewable electricity strategy. The technical criteria related to RECs under these reporting frameworks also keep evolving over time. Therefore, companies should understand these requirements or be well guided to ensure the credibility and compliance of REC procurement.
A well-designed procurement approach should be both credible and aligned with business objectives.
