Monsoon has pioneered another market for Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), this time in Bangladesh.
Companies in Bangladesh can now Purchase RECs!
Monsoon Carbon announced the registration of the first REC project in Bangladesh in March 2020. This addition means that companies are able to verify their consumption of renewable electricity, and better deliver on their sustainability goals.
Tetulia Solar Project
The Tetulia Solar Project was registered by Monsoon Carbon on the TIGR platform. This project expects to generate approximately 12,000 RECs per year over its lifespan. The RECs from this project have been completely sold out for 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Sonargaon Rooftop Solar
Monsoon has followed up the success of the Tetulia Solar Project with the addition of Sonargaon Rooftop Solar, a 13.7MW system that generates 1,730 RECs per year. Sonargoan Rooftop Solar has been registered on the I-RECs standard.
Spectra Solar Farm
Monsoon has also registered the 35MW Spectra Solar Farm.
About RECs
A REC is evidence that a unit of electricity was generated from a renewable source. RECs are issued and purchased on the basis that one certificate represents one megawatt hour of renewable electricity.
These certificates are purchased and retired to reduce a company’s Scope 2 emissions. Outside of the EU and the US, the most common standard for RECs is the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC).
Purchasing I-RECs is a cost-effective way to reduce a company’s carbon footprint. For the owners of renewable energy projects, I-RECs reward a project for the environmental attributes of the power they generate. This incentivises the replacement of non-renewable power and supports the transition to clean, renewable national grids.
