What are RECs?
► RECs are the environmental attributes of electricity that have been generated from renewable energy power plants
► 1 REC represents the environmental attributes of 1 MWh of specified renewable electricity generation
► The REC associated with each MWh can be sold separately from the actual electricity
► A MWh of electricity combined with a REC = “green electricity” (zero GHG emissions)
How do RECs work?
In many countries, electricity used by companies is a mix of all the electricity generated, including from non-renewable sources. Companies can’t choose to exclusively use renewable energy from the national grid.
RECs solve this problem.
RECs are created for each MWh of renewable energy produced by power plants registered on the REC standard. Businesses can then purchase these RECs to ensure that no greenhouse gas has been released in the generation of the electricity they’ve used.
